It’s amazing how everything can change in the blink of an eye. To be honest, even though I escaped this house, a part of me thought I’d be stuck here forever. At least, metaphorically speaking.
When Travitha forced me to blow out the candles on the magic cake, I didn’t even care. My childhood was not worth saving. My life was not worth saving. Or at least it didn’t feel that way at the time.
Summer had destroyed everything. Every day, I’d wake up screaming from a nightmare as I relived the fire. My mom’s last words would echo in my head. I’d hear the crackle of the flames, only to wake up and discover it was just Don rustling the cereal box. I’d think to myself, “Is this it? Is this my life forever?”
I’d close my eyes and desperately wish to go back to that day. I’d beg my mom to make popcorn and watch a movie inside with me instead. Or I’d tell her to run inside the shower and extinguish herself. Or I’d call the fire department just two seconds sooner. I’d save her a million times. Sometimes I thought if I just kept my eyes closed forever, maybe I’d be able to keep her here with me…
