Read the Prologue: “Parental Advice”
Tomi and Jarrett stood at the front door of their house with smiles on their faces. “That was such a wonderful movie, Jarrett,” Tomi said. Jarrett smiled back. “See? And you thought I didn’t have time for date nights anymore!”
As Tomi leaned over and gave him a kiss on the lips, she heard bickering coming from inside the house. “Do you think our parents are doing okay with Cheesy?” she worried.
“They’re pros! How could they not?” Jarrett grinned. “After all, you and I turned out pretty great!”
The door opened as Tomi and Jarrett stepped inside. In the living room, Hannah and Lucia were arguing as Cheesy wailed.
“Look Hannah, I’ve raised two wonderful children. I think I know what this baby needs. He needs to lay on the rug until he cries. Then, and only then, do you maybe do something about it,” Lucia stated matter of factly.
Hannah shook her head. “I’m not questioning your skills as a mother… but this is an entirely new life stage. You can’t just treat him like a newborn and forget about him.”
Lucia rolled her eyes. “You’re far too lovey dovey. We’ve already fed him and changed his diaper. The only thing we can do now is let him cry it out.”
Cheesy looked up at Hannah with sadness in his eyes. “Wahhhhhh!” he bawled.
Hannah shook her head. “I’m picking him up, Lucia. I don’t want him to feel alone!” She leaned down and cuddled Cheesy.
“Don’t cry my sweet grandson. It will all be okay. Grandma is here now,” she said as she snuggled him.
“Oh! So YOU’RE Grandma? What am I? Grandma Number 2?” Lucia snarked.
Hannah glared at her. “Well up until a moment ago, I thought we were both Grandma but I guess now you’re —“
At the door, Tomi and Jarrett stood there with their mouths gaping open.
“We’re home!” they said in unison cutting the argument off.
Lucia shot Tomi a look. “Honey. Tell me the truth: you absolutely leave Cheesy to cry so he learns to be a strong, independent sim, right?”
Tomi fidgeted. She wasn’t sure how to tell her mom she was completely wrong. As she looked awkwardly at Jarrett, he chimed in to help her.
“Actually Lucia, it’s important for Cheesy to get lots of love so he doesn’t feel neglected. That could really lead to trauma for him growing up. All of the books say he needs to be snuggled endlessly to become a Top Notch Infant!” he grinned proudly.
Hannah smiled smugly as she rocked Cheesy. “See Lucia?”
Lucia’s eyes narrowed. “Fine. But don’t be surprised if he turns out super needy.”
Tomi looked at her mom. “That’s enough mom,” she said as she walked over to her. Tomi sniffed her mom’s breath. “Have you been drinking nectar again?! And while babysitting your grandson?”
Lucia shrugged. “So what? It was just a couple of splashes…”
Hannah looked at Tomi. “Yes, a couple of splashes in four glasses. I’ve personally never seen a sim drink so much.”
“Oh honey, you need to get out more,” Lucia snarked. She turned and smiled at Jarrett. “Look sweetheart, I know you took your Mommy’s side but I forgive you.” She puckered out her lips and blew him a kiss.
“Eww! Mom! What are you doing? Are you hitting on my husband? The father of your grandson?” Tomi said disgusted.
“Oh Tomi, darling. No — well — maybe. But I just don’t want him to feel neglected. The man was right. If you love someone, you must nurture them with plenty of love. And that’s all I want to do. I want to nurture our love.”
Tomi looked at Lucia and then at Jarrett. “What is she talking about?”
Jarrett looked back at her uncomfortably. “Tomi, you remember your mom’s wedding toast? Well… that wasn’t the only time she’s hit on me. She also hit on me the day you took me to meet her. I didn’t want to tell you and make you feel uncomfortable but she propositioned me to woohoo in a dumpster!”
Tomi’s eyes bulged. “What?!” She turned to face her mom. “Mom! I can’t believe you!”
Lucia pulled out another glass of nectar from her inventory and gulped it down. “Oh relax Tomi. I just wanted to test his loyalty to you,” she said before mumbling under her breath, “…and maybe get some action with the hottest man I’ve ever met.”
Hannah covered Cheesy’s ears. “I’m just going to take him outside while you all finish this discussion.” As she walked by Jarrett, she gave him a sympathetic ‘you’re mother-in-law is crazy’ smile.
“I can’t believe what I’m hearing,” Tomi said to her mom. “This is absolutely sick. He’s my husband.”
As she stared in shock at Lucia, Mateo arrived at the front door. “How’s my little man? Did the babysitting go well?” he smiled.
“Oh please,” Lucia glared at Tomi. “Your dad hits on him more than me.”
Mateo shifted his eyes uncomfortably and gulped.
Tomi looked back at Jarrett again. “What is she talking about?”
Jarrett cringed. “Tomi, I didn’t want to ever tell you this but your parents are crazy. They’ve both tried flirting with me.”
Tomi couldn’t believe her ears. “You two — it’s time to go,” she said ushering Mateo and Lucia out the door. “I can’t believe I invited you both into my home. I’ve never been more disturbed in my life.”
Mateo and Lucia both pouted as they looked at Jarrett. How could he betray us, they simultaneously thought.
“Once you calm down honey, we’ll come by again, okay?” Lucia said to Tomi as she stepped outside the front door.
“I —“ Tomi began to say as she stared at her mother. All words had escaped her though at this point. She shook her head vigorously and closed the door.
Jarrett put his hands in his pockets and smiled awkwardly. “So that was some movie earlier, right?”
Tomi face palmed. “How could you keep this from me?”
Jarrett closed his eyes as his face turned somber. “I didn’t want you to see your parents differently. They’re your family.”
Tomi walked over to him. “Jarrett. I’m not mad at you. I just wish you had told me how uncomfortable they were making you. I had no idea. I never would’ve let them come over. They’ve been weird ever since I was a kid and pushing away all of my friends,” she paused. “I now understand why.”
Tomi kissed Jarrett on the lips. “I need to go upstairs and just process everything that happened. Can you and your mom watch Cheesy? Or do you need to get back to work?”
Jarrett smiled at her reassuringly. “Of course we can watch Cheesy. Don’t worry about a thing.”
Tomi smiled solemnly. Believe me, she thought. That’s the last thing I have to worry about… I’m far more worried about my parents being in love with my husband.

Estranged (Follows Chapter 268)
The wooden floorboards squeaked as Jamie paced around the loft’s living room with the phone in her hand.
I really should call him, she thought to herself as she looked at the ring on her finger.
Caiden and Jamie were going to The Scott house for a family gathering and she felt oddly conflicted about leaving her dad out of her life.
Ever since she moved out of Don’s house, Jamie felt unsure about what kind of relationship she wanted with her dad, if any. He had done such a wonderful thing by giving her the money to start a life with Travitha. However, with an entire lifetime of always choosing to be selfish, was one shining moment of selflessness really enough to fix that?
Not really, she thought. Still though, he’s my dad and he deserves to know I’m engaged. Maybe he’d even want to celebrate it with us. He was so disappointed about missing my birthday.
As she continued to pace, Travitha walked down the stairs.
“You okay, Jamie?” Travitha asked with a concerned half smile.
“I was thinking about calling Dad,” Jamie shrugged.
Travitha grimaced. “Why? He doesn’t care about us. I doubt he’s even thought about us since we left.”
Jamie looked at her sister, catching her eyes. She could see the gloominess and hurt pouring through at just the mere mention of Don’s name. It’s amazing how with all of the happiness we’ve given Travitha, his existence still brings out her gloomy trait, Jamie thought with a sigh.
In that moment though, Jamie realized how important it was she invited Don to the family gathering. Not just for her, but for Travitha. He may have been a terrible father but Jamie knew he cared about them in his own weird way. Travitha needed to know that too.
Jamie walked over to Travitha and gave her a hug.
“Oh sweetheart,” she solemnly said as she held her tightly. “Dad does care. He just… doesn’t know how to show it.”
Travitha pulled back. “Then why did he ditch us at the first chance he got? He didn’t even fight to keep me.”
Jamie looked at her. “Did you want to stay with him?”
Travitha shook her head. “Not in a million years but I wanted him to want me in his life for even a second,” a tear began dripping down her face.
Jamie reached for Travitha’s cheek and quickly wiped the tear away. “Dad is a simple but complex man. I know you think he didn’t love you but he let you leave because he knew it would be the best thing for you. For both of us. He actually did it because he cares.”
Travitha shook her head. “That makes no sense.”
Jamie smiled softly at her sister. “Don’s a terrible father. The worst, actually. He’s selfish, he’s obsessed with Chloe, and he hardly ever makes a smart choice. But, he took me in when I needed family… and he took you in too. He took us both in because on some level he cares about us. But even though he cares about us, he doesn’t know how to care for us. It’s not spiteful. It’s not evil. He’s just incapable for whatever reason,” she paused. “And I wish I had the answers as to why. I wish I knew more about him and his childhood to understand why he’s so incapable of taking care of us and why he’s so driven by his selfishness. But I don’t. All I know is, he wants to see us happy.”
Travitha looked up at Jamie. “Then why haven’t you told him that you’re getting married? Wouldn’t that make him happy to know you’re happy?”
Jamie took a deep breath. “It would. Thank you, Travitha.”
Jamie pulled her phone back out and dialed her dad.
“Dad?” she said as she heard him pick up the phone. “I have some news.”
