It sneaks up on you. It really does. One moment they’re spinning above a bassinet, the next they’re spinning around a cake picking their final trait, ready to leave you.
I thought I had just a little more time. Every day. Those moments when I was so busy chasing the toddlers and Jarrett would sit on the swings alone. I’d tell myself, “I’ll play with him tomorrow.” Those moments when Caiden would sneak out and I’d catch him and give him a lecture. I’d tell myself, “I can’t wait for him to leave this phase.”
But suddenly I blinked and they were both gone. Oh what I would give to have one more day with my little Jarrett just to play sea monster around the play set. Oh what I would give to have Caiden walk through that door again with a nightly wild adventure to share with me.
When you’re in the throes of it, it’s hard to see past the moment. Truthfully, it’s hard to even see the moment you’re in. Then again, memory is a funny thing. It has a way of wiping away the bad moments so everything looks greener and sunnier in the past.
