Jamie stood in the room, frozen. Is it hot in here? she thought as she stared at Travitha.
“Jamie? Chloe? Somebody! Tell me! Who is this?” Travitha demanded as she pointed at the urn.
I feel dizzy, Jamie thought to herself. She closed her eyes and breathed deeply to try and balance her body. How am I supposed to tell her that’s her — our dad. A tear dropped down from her eye. Don was far from the best parent but he was still their parent.
She looked at Travitha. Suddenly, she could see herself standing on her childhood home’s back patio. Don’t go back there. Why are you flashing back there? Jamie asked herself.
She could remember everything. The smell of the ash. The sound of the firefighters tears as they hit the pavement. Her mom’s voice as the flames engulfed her. There was so much screaming.
And yet I didn’t even cry, Jamie thought. I just stood there. Helpless. Broken. I stood there knowing my entire world was over and there was nothing I could do to change it. I knew there never would be.
Just like right now. She looked at Chloe, then at Travitha, and then….
