Back at the Scott house, Casey pulled out his phone to invite Leila over.
It was Love Day after all, and even if she was a young adult now, they could still spend it together, he thought.
When she arrived, he excitedly greeted her. “Happy Love Day, my love!” he said.
“Hi Casey,” she greeted him.
“So I was thinking. We grab some dinner, maybe head out to a club afterwards? Eating and dancing are two things we can do even with our age difference now!” he smiled. “But first, come inside. I have something for you.”
Inside, he handed her a rose.
“Oh Casey, wow! It’s beautiful!” she said sniffing it.
“I love you. I can’t believe my teen years were suddenly extended a few more weeks. It’s so unfair,” he said somberly. “I can’t wait to age up so I can kiss you again.”
“Yeah, that’ll be great,” she said staring at him.
“Casey, we need to talk,” she said.
They walked upstairs to the hallway. “You can tell me anything,” he said. “Look Casey,” Leila said as she started staring at her phone.
“This has been super fun,” she smiled.
“But I’m going to be going to university and I really need to focus my energy on school.”
“Do you need my help studying?” he asked. “I don’t mind pulling all nighters with you. You could do your university work, I could do my high school projects. It will be great.”
“Yeah… that sounds great…” she smiled. “But here’s the deal Case.”
“When we started dating, we were both teenagers… and I was fine with waiting a few days for you to age up. But now, you’re going to be a teenager for like two more weeks.”
“I’m sure you understand.”
“Leila, it’s not my fault. My age bar literally said my birthday was three days away and then it changed to twenty more. I had no control over this,” he said.
“Hey, I’m not saying you did. I’m just saying, I’m a young adult now. I didn’t sign up for dating some teeny-bopper.”
“Teeny bopper? You make me sound like a kid,” he said cocking his eyebrow.
“You are a kid, Casey,” she said trying to sound empathetic. “And that’s why —“
“I’m breaking up with you,” she waved.
Casey gasped. “Leila! What?”
“Look, I’m not going to wait around for you. I have my studies to focus on and there are so many hot young adults on campus to meet.”
“Leila, how could you do this to me? It’s Love Day,” he cried. “I love you. I thought you loved me too.”
“It’s nothing personal Casey.”
“And for the record, I never once told you I loved you. I liked you… and this was a fun ride. But it’s just time for me to get off.”
He stood up and frowned at her, his eyes wet with tears.
“I hope we can still be friends,” she smiled.
Casey looked at her with puppy dog eyes. “Leila. Please don’t do this. We’re soulmates,” he said.
“No,” she peered at him, “we’re not.”
Casey stood there heartbroken.
“I’ll see you around, Case,” Leila said as she headed down the stairs.
