It was Saturday morning and the wedding day had finally arrived.
Hannah was a bundle of nerves and could only eat a small piece of microwave cake for breakfast.
She anxiously applied her makeup. She couldn’t believe today was the day.
As she pat her cheeks with the brush, she thought about how much her life had changed since she moved to Brindleton Bay. She found her mind drift off…
“It was my very first day in Brindleton Bay. I had taken Buttercup to the park —not that my couch potato dog was very interested in anything it had to offer.”
“I saw a bunch of people congregating around the chess table, watching the match. I never thought chess was interesting but I wanted to meet the neighbors so I joined the crowd.”
“Always being ridiculously forward, I greeted everyone and blurted out, “Hey guys! I’m Hannah!” This man with sandy blonde hair was in the midst of making his chess move. I was sure I threw off his concentration and was waiting for some irritated response.”
“But instead he put down his chess piece and waved at me, “Hi, it’s nice to meet you Hannah, I’m Travis.””
“He was so friendly and welcoming. I instantly felt a connection to him.”
“Honestly, I think I knew within seconds that I had met my future best friend. There was just something about him…and maybe. Maybe I would’ve seen how much I could care for him sooner. But…”
“Then Justin entered the park and he immediately caught my eye.”
“I can’t explain why…I’m sure it has something to do with my upbringing, but I’ve always been attracted to the wrong men. Not that I ever realize until they break my heart, of course.”
“I spent my childhood trying to feel seen by my parents. So I suppose it only makes sense that I thrive on finding men that I can pursue, who in return, make me feel seen, even if it’s just for a day.” But if I hadn’t seen Justin… if I hadn’t been so busy trying to follow the unattainable that I’ve trained myself to search for…”
“Maybe I would’ve seen Travis.”
“Maybe I would’ve realized that everything I was looking for had been right there in front of me. If I hadn’t turned around and I just kept talking to Travis, maybe instead of…”
Justin.
and Geoffrey
and Marcus
and Bjorn.
“There would’ve just been Travis. My best friend…who I love so much…”
“But instead, I met Don. And I fell in love with him. And he fell in love with me. I know Travis wanted me to call off the wedding and be with him but I’ve had my heart broken far too many times to ever turn around and do that to someone else.”
“The truth is though, at the end of the day, I’m just scared. I’m scared I could lose the one person I’ve ever truly loved more than anyone in my entire life. What if Travis got tired of me? What if I’m just not enough? What if… what if everything changed and I lost my best friend forever. That’s not a risk I could take. I will be happy with Don. He treats me so well and he loves me so much. It’s not like I’m settling. I truly do love him… I do…”
When her mind came back to the present, she looked at herself in the mirror. Her makeup was a mess. She had zoned out completely and had to redo it.
After fixing her makeup, she walked to the top of the castle to look outside.
It looked like the weather report was wrong. Not a rain cloud in the sky today.
She was getting married and even the weather wanted to assure her that her day would be perfect. But she couldn’t shake the wave of sadness she was feeling. Was marrying Don the right choice? She shook her head and brushed it off as wedding jitters again. “Stop psyching yourself out,” she muttered to herself. “It will all be okay. I love Don and he loves me.”
She took a deep breath and walked out to the front of the castle, ready to meet the guests. She was ready to get married.
Suddenly, her calendar binged. “WHAT?!? The location has been changed to Old Penelope Plane Wreck?!”, she screamed internally.
She wanted to cry. How could Don do this to her?
She sat on the bench, trying to keep it together. And then she picked up her phone, and called for a ride.
She arrived an hour early for her wedding at Old Penelope Plane Wreck. As the dust flew behind her, she went from sad to furious. This was far from her dream…
