The rain trickled down the window as Tomi looked out from the nursery. Down below, she could see Jarrett still working hard at his robotics table. He won’t even take a break for the rain, she thought. Tomi reached her hand up and closed the blinds.
“Sleep well, my little Cheesy,” she whispered as she looked at him. He was laying on his star covered sheets, happily sucking his thumb.
Tomi walked over to her bed and slid off her rabbit eared slippers. As she pulled the covers down, she looked at Jarrett’s side.
I miss my husband. When did life become so different from what it was? When did he stop being that playful, carefree man I fell in love with?
Tomi pulled out her phone and started swiping through pictures of Cheesy. It felt like she had a million of them. But as she swiped through, she realized that every time Jarrett was there, he was in the background. Always working on another robot part. Always distracted…but worst of all, always frowning.
Tomi sighed. Sometimes she wondered if this was just a moment in time or what she should expect from their life for now on. Would Cheesy ever know his father as the happy go lucky man he once was? Or will he only ever see him constantly standing over the robotics table, never having time for anything or anyone else?
