Synopsis:
In this sensual chapter, Caiden and Jamie’s night quickly turns steamy as they try to make new memories by the roaring fire.
Excerpt:
Caiden and Jamie walked inside their dark living room. The moonlight beamed through the window, reflecting across the wooden floorboards. Trying not to wake Travitha, the two of them made their way quietly into the bedroom. As they stood together in the dark, Caiden held Jamie’s hand in his.
“Your hand is freezing,” he said, concerned as he rubbed his fingers against hers trying to warm them. “Do you want me to make you a warm bath? I could light some candles —“ He stopped short. Candles. Fire. Oh I really hope I didn’t trigger her with that. I didn’t mean to, he thought as he looked at her solemn face.
“I’m a llama,” he said self deprecatingly. “I didn’t mean — no candles. Maybe some twinkle lights instead? I could string them across the ceiling!”
Jamie squeezed his hand as a slight smile shifted across her face. “Caiden. Candles are fine.”
Caiden scrunched his face, as if trying to erase his own fears from his mind. He vigorously shook his head. “Nope. No candles. No fireplaces. No fire. In fact, I’m going to go into build mode right now and bulldoze this fireplace right here in the bedroom, okay? We don’t need it. And I’m installing a sprinkler system throughout the house… and fire proofing the stove. And —“
Jamie chuckled. “No. I swear — Caiden. I’m going to be fine. You don’t need to bulldoze the fireplace, okay?”
Caiden breathed deeply. “Are you sure? It will only take a second.”
Jamie rolled her eyes. “I’m sure,” she paused. “Can you get me a glass of water? I’m parched.”
Caiden stood there, gazing into her eyes as he second guessed leaving her alone for even a moment. “Sure,” he sighed. As he walked out the door and down the hallway, he could feel the anxiety rising within him. He walked over to the sink and filled a glass with water. As he stood there holding the glass, he looked at it. It wasn’t long ago he saw a glass like that as half full. Now all he saw was the emptiness he was almost left with.
You can do this. You’re Caiden Scott. You’re brave. And she’s fine… he thought. As he walked back towards the bedroom, he saw a flicker of light coming from behind the door. He could feel his heart leaping out of his chest. No, not another fire. I can’t lose her…
He frantically pushed opened the door. Around the corner, he saw a fire flickering inside the fireplace. As his eyes wandered towards the floor, he saw Jamie lying on the rug, dressed down in a tiny blue slip.
“I think it’s time we make some new memories in front of the fire, don’t you?” she said with a sly smile.
